One of the drawbacks from written communication is that it is difficult to express emotions. Good writing skills come in handy when you are preparing email marketing messages. Too often people think that adding in extra punctuation, like exclamation points, gets the point across, but in reality, too many exclamation points can be distracting and annoying. Improve your writing skills to make effective email marketing messages.
Using exclamation points to show emphasis is just a cover for the poor writing ability of the sender. Taking the time to use words and sentences to express emotion makes the email better to read and shows that you are not just sending out useless emails, but that you are really working hard to market your business.
The Problem with Exclamation Points
Exclamation points may seem to express emphasis on the surface. The truth is that they do not put emphasis on a word, but just express importance that is already obvious in the sentence. In some cases an exclamation point can be obnoxious. Overusing them can make reading difficult and can really interfere with the whole message.
Rather then using exclamation points that distract, you can use words to convey the same urgency or excitement that you were trying to convey with the exclamation point. You can do some work and really put meaning in your words and not just create a visual, which is really all an exclamation point does.
Get Creative
If you are not a gifted writer, then it may take some work for you to learn how to use words to convey emotion. You might want to brush up on your writing skills. Read examples of good marketing emails and see what they do to covey emotion.
It is too easy to fall back on exclamation points if you do not feel comfortable with your skills as a writer. Take a creative writing class. Also stop using exclamation points completely. If you let yourself use them once the it is too easy to overuse them.
Avoid the use of exclamation points by rereading what you have written. Get a thesaurus and a dictionary to help you out. If you get the urge to use an exclamation point then just go over what you wrote and figure out a better way to express what you mean without using the exclamation point.
You may need to practice your writing skills. You may want to write out sentences where you would use an exclamation point and practice making them expressive without the punctuation. This can be a great exercise to get yourself in the habit of avoiding exclamation points.
Exclamation points have no point in sales writing. They are overdone and they are often associated with spam. If someone opens up your email and sees a flood of exclamation points then you will probably lose them right there. Become a master with words and lose the reliance on exclamation points to make your emails more effective and efficient.
