Lead generation is imperative. Without a big list to back your online business up, you're just not in the game to win. Really. Some tactics work better than others, but some are just not right. Here are the four most shameful email marketing efforts that you should completely avoid:

1. Buying lists

Buying a list of names and email addresses isn't merely a waste of time, it's a waste of money. You can't use them, legally, at least in the United States. The CAN SPAM Act of 2003 prevents you from emailing to any person that hasn't agreed to receive mailings, in writing. So, that whole list you paid for is just useless, unless you want to pay huge fines and face possible jail time.

2. Emailing your friends and family

Sending offers to your friends and family is a sure way to tick people off. You really don't want to get them upset, but again, you're technically breaking the law. Even those people need to give you permission to email them about your business. All it takes is one not-so-good friend to complain and you could have your ISP shut you down.

3. Emailing offline clients

If you have an offline business, you still shouldn't email them, unless they have given you specific permission to email them when you collect the information. Thought it's prudent to bring your offline business online, don't break down the bond you've made with your clients by sending them email solicitations that they jut don't want.

4. Using False or Misleading Header Information

Never use aliases when sending email. Bogus ISPs and misleading information is the way that spammers hide from discovery. Always use a standard email address in your "From" line that people can rely on when support issues arise.

5. Leaving Off Geographical Information

You must tell people where your business is located. If you do business out of your home, get a post office box to avoid using your home address, but be sure to include your location in all email correspondence with customers.

6. Honor All Requests to Opt Out

People must have a way to contact you so they can opt out of your list, and you must provide this information in every message you send. You must also honor the requests and not mail people who have opted out again.

7. Not Following the Rules of Email Marketing

If you want to build a solid online business, you should set up an online autoresponder service that will protect you. Not only will your mail deliverability be higher, the service will house the names and email addresses you collect for you. The service will also back you up on any spam complaints and make sure your emails comply with the law, so that you're fully protected.
